How to use the Pomodoro timer

The Pomodoro Technique in 5 steps.

  1. 1

    Pick one task

Before starting the timer, decide exactly what you'll work on. One task only — no switching during the session.

  2. 2

    Start a 25-minute session

Hit Start. Work on your chosen task until the timer ends. If a distraction comes up, write it down and return to it after the session.

  3. 3

    Take your break

When the timer rings, stop working. Take the 5-minute break. Stepping away is not optional — it's what makes the next session effective.

  4. 4

    Log it to a habit

After the session ends, a prompt appears asking if you want to log this session to one of your habits. Select a habit to count the work toward your daily progress.

  5. 5

Repeat and take a long break

After 4 sessions, take a 15–30 minute break. This cycle keeps you productive for hours without burning out.

Tips for better focus sessions

🎯

One task per session

Decide what you're working on before you start the timer. Ambiguity is the enemy of focus.

🚫

Kill distractions first

Close tabs, silence notifications, put your phone face-down. 25 minutes of real focus beats 2 hours of distracted work.

📋

Keep a capture list

When a random thought or task comes up during a session, write it down and come back to it. Don't break the session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about Pomodoro and this timer.

Why 25 minutes?

25 minutes is short enough to start without resistance but long enough to make real progress. The fixed end point also makes it easier to resist distractions — you know you only have to focus until the timer rings.

What should I do during the break?

Step away from screens. Stretch, walk, get water, or just look out a window. The break is for mental recovery — scrolling social media doesn't count as rest.

Can I change the session length?

Yes. Use the Settings panel in the timer to adjust session length, short break length, and long break length to whatever works best for you.

How does the habit logging work?

After each work session completes, the timer shows your habits and lets you pick one to log. Binary habits get marked done; duration habits add the session minutes; quantity habits add 1.

Should I use the Pomodoro technique for every task?

It works best for tasks that require sustained focus — writing, coding, studying, deep work. For quick admin tasks or meetings, you don't need it.

Pair it with habit tracking

After each Pomodoro session, log your work directly to a habit. Focus sessions become habit progress automatically.
